Hey,
Well here it is, I have finally pulled my finger out and writing up a little about the Kaitum 2 GT.
I have had the tent for about 2 months now, overall I am very happy with it, so here we go...
The Tentmaker...http://www.hilleberg.com/
They are a small company which pretty much only make tents and have been for around 30 years. Their website is very nice, so I suggest you check it out. The history section is quite interesting.
The best thing I like about their tents is that they make a design and stick to it, with only small improvements if any each season. Unlike some of the other companies who change models every few years or less.
The Kaitum 2 GT is a very long tent, at just over 5 Metres it leaves you really thinking about where to put it. A couple times I have walked around for 10 minutes or so looking for the perfect spot. So if you are going somewhere where it might be a bit tight, reconsider taking this massive palace.
The features are fantastic, a little more limited than it's bigger brother the Keron. Such as smaller flaps over the entrance zippers, no fly-screen in the vestibule vents and the different fabric and poles. What it loses in features it makes up with the reduced weight and it is still probably stronger than most the tents out there with its kerlon 1200 fabric. Just recently, I had it up on the top of Mount Bogong here in Victoria, Australia with winds around the 110km/h range. It felt like it could take a little more than that though.
The space inside is massive, the GT (Garage) is big enough for the backpacks plus plenty of room left over for cooking and for people to come and go. For example, the same trip, I had 7 people hanging out and cooking on either side of the tent with room left over.
Pros:
Large, if weather is bad. It's a great place to hang out
Well thought features
Strong poles
Nice guy lines
Outer goes all the way to the ground, great for bad weather and stops bugs getting in.
Cons.
Heavy for a 2 person (I don't mind carrying the extra weight for the comfort), consider the 3 person. Better weight to person ratio.
I would have liked to see a fly screen in the vestabule air vents like the Keron has.
Would be nice to have the guy lines that reflect, the little reflective patches on the tent aren't enough.
Here are some more photos:
I am 1.8 Metres tall and 78Kg just to give you some perspective.
